Eco-Chic: Sustainable Summer Swaps for Every Room

As the days stretch longer and the sun begins to warm every corner of our homes, summer invites us to live lighter, breathe deeper, and make intentional changes to support comfort during the heat of the season. It's the perfect time to refresh our spaces—not just for aesthetics, but to align with nature’s rhythm and enhance our well-being.

Whether it’s cooling down overheated rooms, swapping out heavy textiles, or bringing in more daylight and air, a few thoughtful updates can go a long way. Let’s explore simple, room-by-room sustainable swaps that not only ease the summer heat but also lighten your spirit and reduce your environmental impact.

Managing Summer Sun & Heat: A Window Story

In my own home, the windows face east, which means I get a beautiful wash of morning light—but also a surge of early heat. In winter, it’s a blessing, naturally warming the space. But in summer, it can be a bit intense and requires creative solutions to stay cool without cranking up the air conditioning.

One of the easiest and most effective ways to manage summer sun is by updating your window treatments. If you're ready to invest in something long-term, solar shades are a beautiful and practical solution. They filter light, reduce glare, and block heat while still maintaining your view of the outdoors. They're ideal for living rooms, kitchens, and even home offices where you want to preserve brightness without the burn.

However, if you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, try installing a double curtain rod. Pair sheer curtains (to maintain airflow and soft light) with blackout or thermal drapes for the times of day when you need full coverage. This simple setup allows you to control the mood, light, and temperature of a room with minimal effort, and it can dramatically reduce your cooling costs.

Pro Tip: Solar shades are better when using a black color, as you can see through them. In contrast, choose light-colored curtains or window films for the double curtain rod, which reflect more heat than darker ones. Bonus if they're made of organic cotton, hemp, or linen!
