Sketching New Foundations: My Journey into Architectural Illustration

I’ve been wanting to write this blog since last December. Over the past year, I’ve had the honor and privilege of studying with a master illustrator and becoming part of the Bertrand Williams School under the guidance of Shannin Williams. With a family-owned business, Shannin’s mission is clear and powerful: to keep the art of hand drafting and architectural illustration alive in a world that’s increasingly reliant on digital shortcuts. It’s a mission I wholeheartedly believe in.

Her website says it best:

“I help interior designers break free of digital technology and get back to their roots of creativity by using hand skills. Somewhere along the way, we interior designers moved away from hand skills, drawn in by the allure of computers and tech. But in doing so, we lost some of our creative essence, becoming more like computer operators than designers.”

It’s a sentiment that struck a deep chord in me. In a design industry dominated for decades by computer-aided drafting, the soul of artistic expression has slowly faded. Cold, lifeless renderings have replaced the warmth and humanity of hand-drawn illustrations. Digital tools are polished and efficient, yes—but often sterile. They rarely convey the emotional resonance or lived-in spirit of a space.

I know this firsthand. When I graduated from college, I chased the path that promised stability—higher pay, fast-paced firms, and AutoCAD-heavy roles. I traded sketchbooks for screens, creativity for deadlines. Somewhere in the hustle, I lost my connection to the craft.

I lost myself.
